What is your Favorite All-Time Comedy?

Created by Meetz1064 Created 07-27-09 Updated: 08-10-09
There have been a number of comedy shows on television over the years…and it’s really hard to find a place to start listing any of them. The Honeymooners, The Carol Burnett Show, and Laugh-In were some of the earliest shows that just had audiences—on air and at home—roaring with laughter.

Career criminal Norman Fletcher ('Fletch') is doing 'porridge' at Slade Prison. Inside he tries to avoid trouble while scoring 'little victories' over the authorities and dispensing wise words to the other prisoners, especially his young cellmate Godber.

Porridge remains one of the definitive British sitcoms - still vital and funny enough to get primetime re-runs 25 years after its first transmission. Most successful sitcoms portray a world in which characters are thrown together in situations they cannot escape - Porridge proves this in the most literal sense; there really is no way out for Fletch (Ronnie Barker) and his mates.

The original sketch show, and to this day one of the funniest. So successful, that several films were released to take advantage of the crew's popularity. John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and the late, great Graham Chapman came up with some of the funniest pieces to ever grace television. Who could ever forget the dead parrot sketch, or the Lumberjack song, or the Vikings in the Spam Café? And then there are the films, with classic characters like Mr. Creosote, the Black Knight, Sir Lancelot, the aged prisoner hanging on the wall... fantastic stuff.

Married ... with Children is a show about the life of the Bundys. They always seem to have bad luck in every episode. They include Al, a lowly women's shoe salesman, Peggy, the wife who sits and watches TV all day, Kelly, an empty-headed but attractive blonde, and Bud, a smart, short, and weird little boy. They also have a dog named Buck, who sits and makes perverted jokes. The sitcom represents a distinct departure from the saccharine-sweet television families viewers had known.

Bearing absolutely no resemblance to real life and doggedly avoiding sentiment and "very special episodes," Married...With Children was not exactly everyone's cup of treacle

The series follows J.D., his friends and his co-workers, as they try to survive both their personal and professional lives. In every episode J.D. has many comical daydreams as well as many "situation comedy" style lines, which are often a result of improvisation. A complete script is written for each episode of Scrubs; however, actors are given opportunities to improvise their lines during the shooting process.

The Golden Girls, which ran from 1985-1992, is based on the lives and interactions of four older women whom have all been divorced/widowed and are now roommates. Bea Arthur's (Dorothy) main goal during the series is to find a companion she can relate to, while her mother Estelle Getty (Sophia) adds her comical outlook and frequent 'Picture it...' stories. Betty White's (Rose) St. Olaf-ness makes her a little corny but lovable. One thing that changes nearly every episode is whom Rue McClanahan (Blanche) is courting. She's a little too promiscuous for her own good...

A 90's sitcom about a group of 6 friends who spend an inordinate amount of time in a coffee shop in NYC. Not many shows on TV have ever been as funny as the first few seasons of Friends.

Felix Unger and Oscar Madison (played by Tony Randall and Jack Klugman respectively) was the truly odd couple. Felix was a straight-lace, like-everything-in-its-place guy. Oscar on the other hand, was simply a slob, who rolled his eyes at Felix whenever Felix got on his case.

This is easily the most brilliant comedy of the last 20 years (except for the 4th season, which sucked). Incredibly well written and acted, never degrading into stupid impossible situations, it is amazing. Just watch the very first episode and you'll be completely hooked.
